XANADU

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan A stately pleasure-

dome decree: Where Alph, the

sacred river, ran Through caverns

measureless to man Down to a sunless sea.

–Samuel Taylor Coleridge

As, I count my hours

with the endless jars’s

of poor man’s coffee,

I hallucinated about

Coleridge’s Xanadu.

May be it’s just

one meal a day or

is the opium that

Keats snorted.

As I lay bare

in grim winter

afternoon,

I see around me

a wasteland,

but I am dreaming of

Khan’s Xanadu.

  1. Sad that Coleridge never finished his poem Xanadu.

The hazards of having bill collectors knock at one’s door.

I guess seeing a wasteland while drinking one’s coffee makes one think what coffee T.S. Eliot was drinking when he wrote his poem.

But wonderful to dream of Khan’s Xanadu.

    1. Hey Drac, Coleridge for me is the finest of all Romantic Poets. Yes it’s such a shame that he couldn’t finish his work.
TS Eliot is another genuis esp. his Wasteland and Hollow Man

    1. Thanks Jim, Coleridge is one of my favourite Romantic poets, “ Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner” is a masterpiece, so is Kubla Khan.
      Thanks for stopping by 🙏❤️

    1. Hey John how are you? Thanks for your kind words. Coleridge is one my favourite poets, hence the poem. He must be rolling his eyes in heaven… 🙄🙄

      1. Yes “ Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner” the teacher who taught me the poem was an albatross around the neck… I’ve heard about this composer …

    1. Ha ha it really made me smile Eddie. What a co-incidence living next to home named Xanadu. Now you know… ( no emojis )
